Arsenal vs Aston Villa – Team News

Gael Clichy has not fully recovered from his hamstring problem, so Kieran Gibbs retains his place in the starting line-up.

Thomas Vermaelen will start alongside Sebastian Squillaci – neither Djourou nor Koscielny are on the bench.

As expected, Nasri and Fabregas have not passed late fitness tests, so Aaron Ramsey continues in midfield.

Bendtner & Chamakh start on bench as usual, with RVP supported up front by Arshavin and Walcott.

Subs: Lehmann, Eboué, Miquel, Denilson, Henderson, Chamakh, Bendtner

Chelsea drew 2-2 with Newcastle, meaning a win today would put us only 1 point behind second place as we head into the last weekend of the season.

Transfer Talk: Wednesday 11th May

Yesterday we brought you the latest news on players who have recently been linked with a move join Arsenal in the summer.  Today, the role is reversed as we look at three players who may be looking to force a move away from the Emirates at the end of the season.

Cesc Fabregas

According to talkSPORT, Pep Guardiola has met with the Fabregas’ family in Spain as he looks to convince our captain that he belongs in Barcelona. Reports suggest that there will be a meeting in London later this month, after the Champions League Final at Wembley Stadium, during which the two clubs will discuss Cesc’s future.

It seems that Guardiola will do almost everything in his power to bring Fabregas to Barcelona (other than offer us the large amount of money we would require in order to relinquish his services). I don’t doubt Fabregas’ importance to the club, but a significant transfer fee could sway my decision on a possible move, as long as the money is put into bolstering the areas of the squad that need a boost. It seems that Wenger will refuse to let out talismanic midfielder leave without a fight.

“…always the same questions turn up and we always have the same answer.

“We have built a young team, on Sunday we beat Man United in a convincing way, with the youngest team ever having played in the Premier League.”

His performances this season have not been at the level that we saw from Cesc last year (mainly due to injury), but he nevertheless remains an key player.  It would be nonsensical for Wenger to let one of our most important players leave in the summer, especially as the team looks to be only a few signings away from achieving great success.  However, Barca’s relentless pursuit of Fabregas may prove ultimately successful. If Cesc wants to leave there is not much that Wenger can do.

Likeliness to leave Arsenal in the summer: 4/5

Nicklas Bendtner

This week, Bendtner has voiced his frustration at his lack of opportunities in the starting 11 this season, especially since Robin Van Persie’s return from injury. It is thought that the young Dane could be on his way out unless some agreement can be made over his future within the squad.

It has been a rather disappointing season for Nicklas. With only 14 starts this season, his lack of game time is obvious to everybody. It is clear that Bendtner wants more chances to play as a target-man, but this is very unlikely the 4-3-3 system that has been recently adopted (with RVP as our front-man). This season, Bendtner has been used on the right-wing, looking extremely uncomfortable in this position.

I do think that Arsène would like to keep hold of him for next season as he offers a physical presence. Although he is similar to Chamakh, he seems to be better than the Moroccan in terms of shooting from the edge of the box. It is interesting to note that no team, including away sides, has scored a goal from outside the box at the Emirates this season. Perhaps not a surprising stat, but nonetheless it should give Wenger something to think about, whether it be about his tactics or signing some players who shoot from range.

Anyway, back to Bendtner. I can understand if Nicklas were to seek a move to another club, as he searches for more starts in his desired position.

Bendtner: “I need to have a talk with him [Wenger] because I’m not satisfied with playing on the right wing, which I’ve done more or less all season long.”

Wenger: “I will sit down with Nicklas at the end of the season to see how he feels. I hope he will stay. I completely agree that he did not get enough chances – it was a very difficult season for him.”

Likeliness to leave Arsenal in the summer: 4/5

Samir Nasri

Nasri is yet to sign a new contract with the club and, with only one year left on his current deal, he has been linked with a move away from the Emirates on numerous occasions. It wouldn’t be surprising if Nasri had attracted interest from other clubs – especially after he stepped up and filled the gap left in central midfield when Fabregas was suffering from injury problems. With 15 goals this season, his performances have been sensational as he looked to prove that Raymond Domenech was wrong not to include him in the French World Cup squad.

Wenger stated last month that he expected Nasri would commit his long-term future to the club, and yesterday Nasri’s agent confirmed that any reports of interest from Italian giants Juventus are purely speculation. Samir will be ready to sit down and negotiate a new contract at the end of the season.

“The interest from Juventus and Inter Milan? There is nothing with them.

“There is no break with Arsenal, in fact, we start over negotiations for the extension of the contract which currently expires in 2012.”

Likeliness to leave Arsenal in the summer: 1/5

Bolton vs Arsenal – Match Preview

Neither Arsenal nor Bolton are in particularly strong form going into this game, with both teams looking to bounce back from disappointing results this week (in Bolton’s case a 5-0 defeat to Stoke in the FA Cup semi final). The draw against Spurs has seen Arsenal lose further ground on Manchester United, and the club has even overtaken by Chelsea. The Gunners have only won 2 of their last 10 games – the only wins coming against Leyton Orient in the FA Cup, and 2 weeks ago against Blackpool. Nevertheless, Arsenal have won 14 of the 23 games against Bolton in the Premier League, with wins in all of the last 8, so the chances of a win for Owen Coyle’s team are very slim.

Today, Manchester United extended their lead at the top of the table to 9 points. A late Hernandez goal secured yet another home victory for the Red Devils. Fergie’s team have turned Old Trafford into a fortress (winning 16 of their 17 games this season), whereas the Emirates is far from the safe haven that it has been in previous seasons. We have already lost to Newcastle, West Brom and Spurs. The good news is that we head to the Reebok Stadium with the knowledge that we have by far the best away record in the league.

Chelsea also have a superior home record this season, and Fernando Torres helped them to a victory over West Ham which moves them three points above us. Yes – I have double-checked, and Torres has scored a legitimate goal. However, £50 million still looks ridiculously stupid when you consider that Maxi Rodriguez scored a hat-trick today.

Interviewed after the Spurs game Wenger said:

“We have to get ready for the next game and fight as we do. This team has a remarkable attitude. We are on a 16-game unbeaten run [in the league], but recently we haven’t got enough points because of too many draws.”

Recent league form:

Arsenal-DDDWDD      Bolton-WDWLLW

Team News:

The chances are that there will only be one change from the team that played against Spurs. Abou Diaby is injured, so Jack Wilshere, who started on the bench on Wednesday, will probably return to the starting line-up.

I have named the team for tomorrow, and therein lies the problem. I already know the team, and Owen Coyle knows the team. The team never changes. The line-up is almost always the same and Wenger is not flexible with the formation. Occasionally Wenger is forced to make changes if we have injuries or suspensions.

Since Robin Van Persie returned from injury, Nicklas Bendtner and Marouane Chamakh haven’t had many opportunities in the starting line-up. In fact, Chamakh wasn’t even on the bench against Tottenham. Bendtner and Arshavin normally feature towards the end of the game – introduced at around 80 minutes – and have little or no effect.

Prediction 1-1

The team is just a bit too predictable. We aren’t anywhere near as difficult to play against this season as we have been in previous years. All it takes is a scrappy goal against our less-than-satisfactory defence and teams feel that they can get a point (or maybe more). The side has not been particularly strong in recent weeks and will be low on confidence  following the draw at White Heart Lane. Hopefully, they will go out tomorrow and prove me wrong.

Arsenal vs Blackburn: Match Preview

Arsène Wenger

Has Wenger lost his mind?

How can Wenger possibly justify keeping Almunia in goal for today’s match instead of playing veteran Jens Lehmann? The gunners haven’t featured for two weeks (due to the international break), but surely Wenger hasn’t forgotten the ridiculous blunder that cost us vital points at West Brom? It makes no sense.

Calling it a mistake would be wrong. That would imply that it was simply an error and that what Almunia intended to do was vaguely sensible. It was worse than when people bring their goalkeepers out really far on FIFA just to annoy you. Nonsensical and unnecessary.

Bearing in mind how many opportunities we have wasted this season, I am genuinely surprised that we are only 5 points behind the league leaders.  The only explanation I have is that the other teams challenging for the title have been equally inefficient. However, by the time we kick off at 3pm, we could be 8 points behind Manchester United. United have an early kick-off against West Ham, and I will be hoping for a major slip-up.

Rant over, I will now focus on 3 positives going into this game:

1) Theo Walcott, who has been out for around 6 weeks with an ankle injury, is back in the squad. Abou Diaby, Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song are also fit. RVP and Bendtner have both shaken off injuries picked up on international duty. Our team has been suffering from the absence of Walcott and Fabregas, so it is important to have them both fit at such a crucial part of the season.

2) We are currently unbeaten in 12 games and have won the last 7 home games against Blackburn. Hopefully today won’t change these statistics.

3)   Blackburn currently sit 19th in the Premier League form guide, taking 2 points from their last 6 games. If we can’t get 3 points, we honestly don’t deserve to take the title.

Team Prediction:

—————–Almunia—————–

Sagna—Koscielny—Squillaci—Clichy

——————-Song——————–

———-Diaby————Fabregas——

Nasri————–RVP———Arshavin

I expect Arshavin to start ahead of Walcott, purely because Walcott has not had any games for several weeks and may be lacking in fitness. Wenger will probably bring him on so that we can utilise his pace mid-way through the second half. Squillaci partners Koscielny in defence because Johan Djourou is injured. I don’t think Wilshere will play because Wenger was quoted yesterday saying that he was worried that Wilshere will suffer burnout from playing too many games.

Predicted Score: 2-1 – Home win

I am not going to predict a big win for Arsenal because I can see this being a much closer game than we expect. Maybe a late winner from Nicklas Bendtner?

International Update: Ramsey to captain Wales against England

14 of our first-team players will be put to the test as they represent their countries over the next week. Several important qualifiers for Euro 2012 and the African Cup of Nations are due to take place, as well as some friendlies that will allow players to gain some much-needed international experience.

Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna have all travelled to Luxembourg to represent “Les Bleus”, who have improved considerably under new manager Laurent Blanc following a dismal World Cup. Gooners must be pleased that Nasri, who has been one of the stand-out players at club level this season, was not included in the French squad the travelled to South Africa last summer.

Robin Van Persie, Nicklas Bendtner, Maroune Chamakh, Thomas Rosicky, Carlos Vela and Emanuel Eboué have also been called up to play for their respective countries, while Henri Lansbury and Kieran Gibbs are representing the England Under 21’s. It is also important to note that Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott and Alex Song would all have featured in their countries squads if they weren’t injured.

Although I think it is great that so many Arsenal players are representing their countries at such a high level, I do feel that this can create some unnecessary problems for the club at such a crucial part of the season. How many times have we seen players injure themselves on international duty? Reports have already started to emerge suggesting that Nicklas Bendtner has picked up a small ankle injury while training with the Danish squad ahead of their match in Norway, and RVP can’t seem to play for Holland without requiring several months on the sidelines afterwards.

Injuries aside, the main focus of the weekend will be on the two extremely talented young midfielders playing tomorrow afternoon at the Millennium Stadium. Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey are used to playing at the same club, but tomorrow they have the rare opportunity to play against each other. The two have pushed their way into the Arsenal first-team (although the latter suffered a major set-back due to the horrible injury suffered just over a year ago), and both will be looking to have a similar impact at international level.

In a surprise move this morning, new coach Gary Speed has handed Aaron Ramsey the Wales captaincy. Ramsey will become the youngest player to captain Wales, in only his 3rd appearance for the country, despite Speed having several more-experienced players in the squad. Ramsey’s last game for his country was over 16 months ago, and many are saying that he is not ready to be given such a large responsibility. However, I am in agreement with Robbie Savage, who says: Ramsey will feel Wilshere has taken over his club slot and he will be looking to prove a bit of a point.” I am sure that Ramsey would relish the opportunity to show just how strong a player he really is.

Jack Wilshere will almost definitely start in the heart of England’s midfield, with Fabio Capello hailing him as the future of the England team. He has put in some incredible performances recently, and has been a revelation in the new-look England team.

“Yes, yes [he will play for England], because he is good, because he plays without fear, and with confidence.  Also for someone so young, he is a leader. It is incredible. I never saw someone so young be a leader on the pitch. It is incredible.”

‘Professional’ Gunners grind out result

Arsène Wenger

Wenger's men keep the pressure on Utd

Arsenal were certainly not at their best tonight. We did, however, manage to gain all three points and keep the pressure on Man Utd. It was a very professional performance from a rapidly maturing team. After the game, Wenger said that “we did the job in a very professional way. We faced a Stoke team that defended very well, very compact, but we were intelligent, calm, patient and overall I believe that we were resilient as well when Stoke had their strong moments because we didn’t give in when they did what they do very well.”

We currently sit one point behind United who face Wigan and Chelsea in the next week. Both teams have managed to take points off of us this season and we hope that they can do us a favour and do the same against our title rivals.

The game started promisingly with a flurry of chances in the first ten minutes. Following a beautiful run from Wilshere, Theo was put through on goal by our captain. Theo was very unlucky not to score as he saw his effort strike against the woodwork and before rebounding into the keeper’s arms. We kept up this early pressure and soon enough we converted it into a goal. Bendtner did well to earn us a corner, and then return the ball across the face of the goal to allow Squillaci to nod it in. With a goal so early on, the Emirates faithful were looking forward to a feast of goals. However, it was not to be as our captain sustained a recurrence of his hamstring injury shortly after the goal. As he departed from the pitch, so too did our spark. The rest of the first half was pretty lacklustre in terms of chances. While Arsenal did dominate in terms of possession, we failed to create much in in the final third. The second half was not much better. Arshavin and Nasri grew into the game as the Stoke team tired. Arshavin was fairly effective, and at times showed his brilliance. With perhaps his best run of the night, he set up Theo who spurned the opportunity when an open goal was presented.

Theo had a very mixed night. He was very ‘hot and cold’. His positioning in the first half was excellent. In the second half, it looked as if nothing was working for him until he jinked past a couple players on the edge of the box, before being floored by a rough challenge. Surprisingly, the referee did not see this as a foul. Unfortunately for Theo, this was the end of his night as he was stretchered off. Theo will miss the final on Sunday with an ankle sprain.

Apart from his assist, Bendtner was poor throughout the game. He was given a rare starting opportunity, and did little to impress. He did not manage to link up well with the midfield or his fellow strikers. Regardless of the fact that in the past he has provided vital goals, he has been highly unimpressive of late and in my opinion, he is a class below the other strikers at the club. He will need to work much harder if he is to become a fan favourite, let alone achieve his self-proclamation of being the best in the world.

Stoke did not really threaten much throughout the game, with most of their attempts coming from set pieces. This meant that Szczesny was largely untroubled throughout the match. However, he did make a superb save late on in the first half to deny Carew.

Injuries

It is a worry that our injury list is growing. With the final only days away and the return leg at the Nou Camp looming, the fact that we are currently without Fabregas, Walcott, RVP and Koscielny is cause for concern. As to whether the latter two will be available for the final is unknown and according to Wenger, “we will know more on Friday.” Walcott will definitely miss the final, but the severity of his injury is currently not possible to determine. Wenger is also unsure of the nature of Fabregas’ hamstring problem. He said that “Fabregas has a hamstring problem but we will assess that tomorrow, tonight it is impossible to say how serious it is. We will know more about it tomorrow.”

Looking forward to Sunday

All three of the writers here at Straigh Talking Gooners are going to be at Wembley for Sunday’s final against Birmingham. We are all really excited for the occasion and hope to be writing a positive review in 4 days time. We hope that we can end the trophy drought and finally bring some much needed silverware back to the Emirates.

Gunners look for Carling Cup victory against Ipswich

After Chelsea demolished Ipswich 7-0 in the fourth round of the FA Cup, it looked like this Carling Cup semi-final tie would be an easy ride for Arsenal. However with such a hectic January schedule, Wenger was forced to rotate the squad, and the team did not come out with the result that was expected.

We now trail Ipswich 1-0 on aggregate (it could have been 2 if their offside bicycle kick hadn’t been disallowed…), and the team need to step up their performance and come away with the win that they so desperately need if they want to win their first piece of silverware since 2005.

Our defence can be quite suspect at times, and should Ipswich score, the game will be much more difficult because they will have that vital away goal. That said, I expect Arsenal to win this game quite comfortably. We are playing at home and the team is on a good run of form. We are still favorites to win the Carling Cup, and anybody who has seen our two recent performances will know that it would take a very special team to knock us out of the competition.

The match will be on BBC, not Sky Sports. Sky will be delighted that they now have an extra day to look for a replacement for Andy Gray, who lost his job today after comments that he made about Sian Massey, the female linesman. With Andy gone, I don’t know if I will watch Sky Sports anymore. I will have to look elsewhere for another commentator who is biased against Arsenal.

Team Prediction:

———————-Szczesny———————

Sagna —-Koscielny —–Djourou —–Gibbs

——Wilshere—–Song——Fabregas——

Walcott———–Chamakh————-Nasri

Despite some excellent performances, Robin Van Persie will probably be rested and replaced by Chamakh. RVP is very injury-prone and Wenger will be wary of playing him in too many consecutive games. I think that excluding our Dutchman would be a big mistake, because he changes Arsenal’s style of play and can produce game-changing goals.

Nicklas Bendtner might start depending on whether or not Wenger actually wants to score. I would also like to see Aaron Ramsay make his first appearance since his return from injury, but it is unlikely -I doubt that he will get more than a few minutes, if that. Arshavin might start, although this is also unlikely because our Russian star seems to be out of favor with the manager, not to mention the fans.

Szczesny, Djourou and Koscielny will all keep their places in the starting line-up because we really don’t have any other choice due to injuries. Sagna will probably play as he missed a few games due to his ban, and I would really like to see Gibbs play ahead of Clichy.

Predicted score  3-1

Ipswich will give us a good game. They have nothing to lose and everything to play for. Going into this game with a 1-0 lead, they have all the encouragement they need to play the game of their lives. I wouldn’t be surprised if they managed to grab a goal at some stage, but in the end our talent in midfield will just be too much. Fabregas and Nasri have been outstanding this season, and the pace of Walcott down the wing adds that extra dimension to our game. If only he could have a bit more confidence in front of goal!

Boring Boring City

Bacary Sagna

A frustrated Sagna saw red

It was a frustrating night for Arsenal. City were playing for the draw from the first whistle which meant that for a large part of the game they had ten blue shirts behind the ball.

That said, we started very brightly. We had two or three glorious chances in the first couple of minutes; namely when Wilshere’s pass presented RVP with a tap-in, but missed the latter’s outstretched leg by a few inches. Both RVP and Fabregas also hit the post in the first half. Undoubtedly we dominated the play. City did manage to break into our half a couple of times with some good runs from Tevez and Yaya Toure. However they were handled well and did not really pose much of a threat. In the second half we continued to threaten Hart‘s goal and forced him to make a number of fine saves. We had 61% possession and 8 more shots than Mancini’s side, 13 to City’s 5 (none of which were on target for City). On another night we would have taken all three points. Lady luck was not on our side.

“We had the performance and not the result” said Wenger. In my opinion this has been the case too often this season.

I am not too sure what more the team could have done to break down a very strong City defence, but I feel that we should have put away the chances that we made.

The game ended on a rather sour note with two red cards for Zabaleta and Sagna. The former fowled the latter before our right back faced up to Zabaleta. The referee deemed this worthy of sending both of the players off. It seems that Sagna was the one who squared up to City’s defender, so I can see why our Frenchman was given his marching orders. However, I understand Mancini’s frustration about Zabaleta’s red card, which was certainly harsh.

City’s tactics could not have been more boring. They went for the draw and I have no doubt that they were happy with the result. It was a very dull display lacking any adventure. To be cautious is one thing, but City were more than cautious, they played negatively. They were more interested in stopping our  play than playing themselves. They used time wasting tactics from the first whistle, with Hart taking plenty of time for each goal kick, and City players taking advantages of fouls to stay on the ground and waste more time.

On where this leaves us in the league

By no means does this rule us out of the title race. Mathematically, Manchester United are in a very good position but as Chelsea have shown, nothing is set in stone in this league. Hopefully we can turn our frustration into a streak of wins. Here at Straightalkingooners, we said at the start of the Christmas period that if we managed 8 points from our 4 games, that would be good. We did just that and so I feel we are on track to continue our title challenge.

Player ratings

Fabianski – 7 A spectator for most of the game. On the rare occasion when he was required to collect a loose ball in the box, he did so with ease.

Clichy – 7.5 Largely untroubled defensively. Provided a good attacking outlet on the left but to no avail.

Djourou and Koscielny – 7 Almost nothing for them to do. Tevez and Yaya Toure did trouble them a bit but they dealt with the threats without too many problems.

Sagna – 7 A mixed night for the Frenchman. Was impressive with his control and defensive duties. Perhaps he was unlucky to receive a red for his episode with Zabaleta. He will be missed when he serves his 3 match ban.

Wilshere – 7.5 Another strong performance from Jack. His final ball was not quite there though. Wasted a glorious chance to score/set RVP with up with a tap-in in the first few minutes. Replaced by Bendtner late in the second half.

Song – 7.5 Whilst he was not required to do too much defending, when called upon, he broke up the City attacks well. Jinked his way into a scoring position in the second half only to waste his chance. Nevertheless, a solid performance from him.

Fabregas – 8 (MOTM) Very unlucky not to score. Combined well with Nasri again and was inches away from putting us 1-0 up in the first half when his shot flew past a beaten Hart only to be denied by the woodwork. Was involved in most of the attacks and on another day could have had a goal and an assist.

Nasri – 7.5 Supported the attack well and had a few moments of brilliance that opened up a resilient City back line.

RVP – 8 He is starting to look more like his former self. Like Cesc, he was very unlucky not to have a goal to his name. Two efforts are worth noting. In the first half he managed to take it past two City defenders only to be denied by the same post Fabregas was denied by. In the second half, he struck a stunning long distance shot which was heading for the top left corner of Hart’s goal. The England international made an outstanding save to deny our Dutchman.

Walcott  – 7 It was a night of ‘almost there’ for Theo. Provided a good outlet to exploit City’s back line and on occasions he looked threatening. Lacked the final ball tonight. Looked upset to be taken off for Arshavin.

Substitutes

Arshavin – 6 Replaced Theo in the second half. He lost the ball three times when he tried fancy flicks. It was a frustrating night for the Russian.

Bendtner – 6 I would have chosen Chamakh ahead of Bendtner tonight. He was almost anonymous during his short time on the pitch.

Transfer Talk: Saturday 18th December

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Japanese under 17 star Ryo Miyaichi, who impressed at the club during his trial earlier in the Summer.

Miyaichi turned 18 this week and signed his first professional contract which will see him join the club in January on a 5 year deal. He will join the squad providing there are no issues with his work permit and I am really excited about his impending arrival.

Nicklas Bendtner could join Everton on loan until the end of the season

With Arsenal expressing interest in Papis Demba Cisse, and a plethora of attacking options already available at the Emirates, it seems that Nicklas Bendtners’ departure in the near future is inevitable. Bendtner has spent most of this season on the bench and would welcome a loan move if it could provide some much-desired playing time, especially if he wishes to keep his place in the national team.

Morten Olsen, the Denmark coach, told Sky Sports “Thinking with the eyes of the Danish national team, you have to have minutes and you have to have enough games, and if he’s not playing in Arsenal we cannot use him of course.”

Likeliness Rating 4/5

Eden Hazard looks set to snub Real Madrid for the Gunners

Hazard has had a great start to the 10/11 season at Lille and is currently one of the hottest young prospects in Europe, having made 17 appearances for the Belgian national team. Last season he turned down the opportunity to join Chelsea in a £12 million deal, but he has recently dropped a big hint that would be interested in joining Arsenal as he now feels “stronger and better equipped for the challenge of playing at a higher level.”

“If I do leave at the end of the season, I don’t want to go somewhere where I will be on the bench. I am young, not 20 until next month, and it will be difficult to break through in a team like Real, where Ronaldo and Kaka will be my competitors. But there are teams like Arsenal, where youngsters can grow more easily into the first team and make their mark.”

I can see Wenger trying to sign Hazard as soon as possible. If he turned down this opportunity he could regret it in the future. With the possibility of Fabregas leaving in the summer, it is important to bring in capable central midfield players.

Likeliness Rating 4/5

Denilson could be set for a £10 million move to the Bundesliga

Reports suggest the Wolfsburg manager Steve McClaren has made Denilson his prime target during the January transfer window, offering the possibility of more regular first-team football. Denilson has lost some playing time this season to Jack Wilshere, but it seems doubtful that he would be tempted to move to a team who are mid-table in the German league. A lack of first-team football and the emergence of lots of young talented midfielders at the Emirates could mean that the young Brazilian is considering his options. Should another more attractive offer come his way, then I wouldn’t be surprised if he decided to leave.

Likeliness Rating: 2/5

Arsenal through to Champions league knockout stage for 11th consecutive season

The Champions League match against Partizan Belgrade on Wednesday could have led to Arsenal failing to qualify from the group stages of the competition for the first time in 11 seasons. Arsenal needed a win to guarantee qualification, but bettering Braga’s result against Shaktar Donetsk would be enough to see us through. To add insult to injury, Spurs had qualified top of their group, which included European Champions Inter Milan, on Tuesday.

Partizan had taken no points from the first five group games, conceding 13 goals, but an Arsenal win was not guaranteed. At 70 minutes the score was 1-1; a penalty from Robin Van Persie in the first half cancelled out by a Cleo goal a few minutes after half time. This would provide for a very tense and dramatic end to the game. At that stage, a Braga goal against Shakthar would have been enough to see Arsenal out of the competition.

However, the introduction of Theo Walcott changed the game. Only 5 minutes after coming off the bench, Walcott fired in an excellent volley following a mistake from one of the Partizan defenders. A few minutes later, Song and Bendtner combined to set up Nasri for a third goal which saw Arsenal obtain a more comfortable 2 goal lead. The 3-1 win ensured second place qualification from group H; Shakthar won 2-0 against Braga to top the group.

Bacary Sagna was sent off late on in the game, and will be unavailable for the first match in the knockout round, the draw for which will take place next week.
